For those of you who were out of town over the weekend for the Fourth of July celebration, the SmackDown world turned upside down when their top heel talent, Edge, suffered an injury at a house show. In a brief report, we will quickly recap what we have gathered over the weekend.
It is believed that Edge suffered a torn Achilles tendon during his match with Jeff Hardy at a live SmackDown/ECW event in San Diego. Five minutes in to their match, the bout was stopped.
The bout started with much posturing as Edge was going around the ring taunting the fans in attendance, so they were only a minute in to the match when the injury occurred. According to several reader reports, it appeared that Edge planted his foot wrong and went down with his leg at a bad angle when he attempted to leapfrog Hardy’s charge at him. The match was immediately called off as EMT’s came to the assistance of Edge. Before leaving the ring, Edge grabbed the mic and apologized to the fans in attendance. He was then helped to the backstage area where he was attended to.
The injury is very serious and will likely require surgery and a long period of down time, with a possibility of missing action for over a year.
It will be interesting to see how WWE decides to explain the injury sustained by Edge, due to WWE having taped this week’s entire Television schedule. The biggest question would be what they do with the Unified Tag Team Titles, which Edge & Jericho currently hold.
The likely scenario would be to have Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase capture the titles.
Premature reports indicate Edge would potentially be back around March of 2010, although this is far but confirmed. This is the same injury that forced several pro athletes to retire, although that probably won’t be the case for Edge. He will likely lose some of his speed, which isn’t a big deal for a pro wrestler, as it would be a pro football player.
Edge has remained the dominant heel on the SmackDown roster and his injury will put a gapping hole within the SmackDown roster and will be interesting to see how WWE reacts to his injury.
In the coming days, we will likely have more information as to when/if he will require surgery and what timeframe he is given for a return. So stay tuned for PWH for all the exclusive inside details on his injury, return and future.
